Getting Around

I like to use the stairs. The elevator is too scary! Plus the button is too high to reach.

Cinco de Mayo Party

Next Wednesday at 3:30 Mr. Blinn is having a Cinco de Mayo party in the children’s floor. Kids can come for Mexican-themed crafts and food. Hmmm…How do you say “Feed me” in Spanish?

Trixie’s Bookshelf: Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats

Meet Rum Tum Tugger, Mungojerrie, Rumpelteazer, Macavity, Mr. Mistoffelees, and more poetic cats in T.S. Eliot’s book. Did you know that the musical Cats came from this book? Could somebody write a poem about me? Ok, Mr. Blinn is going to write one. Here it is…

“Trixie is the library cat.
She’s not very fat (yet).
If she jumps out the window,
She would go splat.”

Ok, that was terrible. While I go bite Mr. Blinn, see if you can come up a better one.

PBS KIDS Library Corner

A cool new area has suddenly appeared in the children’s floor! It’s called the Library Corner. Here’s how Mr. Blinn explains it:

“Today we are launching our PBS KIDS RAISING READERS LIBRARY CORNER. PBS KIDS Raising Readers is a national literacy campaign which is focused on building reading skills at home, at school, in child care, and in the community.

This year the Raising Readers program involves 30 PBS affiliates and over 200 public libraries and school libraries. As a participant, we have created the Library Corner, a unique space in our library for kids to play reading games with their favorite PBS KIDS characters. Beginning today through the end of July, children can come to the Library Corner for printable activities based on popular PBS Kids shows and to access the PBS Kids Island website for fun reading games. During our summer reading program in June and July, we will also have scheduled weekly activities.

In addition, on May 6, Topeka’s PBS station KTWU will be offering a Ready to Learn workshop at the library. Parents, educators, and child care providers will be able to learn how to use PBS KIDS television programs to help children’s reading and literacy skills. We hope that our Library Corner will be a valuable resource for the education of our community’s children!”

Did you understand all that. I didn’t, but this sure looks like a cozy place to hang out!

Summer’s Coming – Volunteers Needed

The summer reading program this year is called “Make a Splash – Read!” To start it off, we are having a Wet & Wild Fun party Wednesday May 26 from 3:30-5:00. Kids can play water games and visit a fire truck. I don’t like getting wet, so I’ll be staying far away! But we need some parents to volunteer to supervise the games. If you’d like to help, let Mr. Blinn know.

New Facebook Page

In a desperate attempt to become as popular as me, Mr. Blinn has started a facebook page for the children’s library. Search for “Independence Public Library Children’s Department.” Who will be the first fan?

Trixie’s Bookshelf: The Cat In The Hat

Dr. Seuss’ book shows that cats can bring all kinds of fun on rainy days! But I would want to have a different kind of hat. Maybe a fedora.

Book Spine Poems

Today the 6th graders from Zion and St. Andrew’s came to visit me and pick another free book through the Reading Is Fundamental Program. Mr. Blinn showed the kids how to make book spine poems, and here are some of the ones they came up with.

Can you feel the thunder?
Under the bridge

Dear Nobody,
The Giver
Ben and me
20,000 leagues under the sea

Charlotte’s web
Waiting for deliverance

Where the sidewalk ends
Kids can jump rope
Leap of faith

Three days
How lazy can you get?
Good night Maman

Trixie’s Bookshelf: Maybe A Bear Ate It!

A child’s book is missing. Maybe a bear ate it…or a stegosaurus stomped on it…or a rhino ran away with it…or a shark swallowed it. Don’t look at me. Trixie didn’t take it! Look in the picture book section for this book by Robie Harris.

Hurry Up

Maybe if I wait long enough, that ball will start rolling towards me.
